Breakaway Guilt
Breakaway guilt is a term coined in 1989 and refers to when a first-generation college student struggles to leave behind their families, friends, and communities to pursue higher education. To fight the feeling and struggle of breakaway guilt, make it a priority to include your family and friends back home as part of your educational journey at Texas State. Educate them about your experiences and make them feel involved in your journey. Also, connect with faculty, staff, and peers at Texas State who are also first gen and can share how they manage breakaway guilt. Just remember, you are not alone in your journey and your family, friends, or found community want you to succeed.
