What are Open Educational Resources (OER)?

Open Educational Resources (OER) are materials that support course work – from textbooks to videos to digital learning objects to practice problems. Once an OER is created it is involved in the ecosystem of the 5Rs: Retain, Reuse, Remix, Revise, Redistribute.


Advantages of Open Educational Resources (OER)

  • Day One Course Materials Access – Your students will be able to access their course materials before the first day of class, and after they have moved onto other courses
  • Dynamic – OER can be updated quickly with the most recent information; from research discoveries to pedagogical methodologies
  • Academic Freedom – You as a faculty member have the ability to remix, revise, and create content tailored to your courses and students needs
  • Flexible Modalities – OER exists in a variety of modalities and materials including (but not limited to) assessments, assignments, activities/labs, books & textbooks, case studies, data sets, diagrams & illustrations, Interactive content, full courses, journal articles, lessons & lesson plans, lecture notes, lectures, modules, primary sources, syllabi, readings.
  • Enhanced Interactivity – There area variety of OER materials that increase learners interactivity with the course content; for example the phET simulations from the University of Colorado Boulder and
  • Diverse – OER are created from a variety of perspectives for a variety of learners which increases the diversity of the materials available around a subject
