Publishing at Texas State University Libraries

Publishing is a major part of the research lifecycle, as well as your impact as a faculty member or graduate student. At Texas State University Libraries we offer a variety of publishing resources to help you start, continue, and amplify your research efforts. This section will focus on summarizing some of the more important resources, as well as highlighting experts and further information.

As a member of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), we are committed to advancing the “principles and practices of open scholarship” (ARL.org). The goal of the publishing support services is to increase the amount of high-quality academic scholarship openly available through best practices and publishing models. We aim to support you at each step of the publishing process and are open to project proposals and partnerships that center around new and emerging media formats.

Open Access Scholarly Publishing

As a member of the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC), Texas State University Libraries is focused on equitable publishing practices and therefore, provides robust support services to faculty and students who wish to publish their scholarly work Open Access. Our publishing program is open-by-design and will continue to advocate for systems that “successfully center agency, accessibility, safety, stability, and community for all users” (SPARC). Open access scholarly publishing plays a major role in the future of academic scholarship.

Support for Multiple Publishing Formats

We offer access to a variety of scholarly publishing platforms, which will be discussed in greater detail in the Publishing Platforms section of this chapter. It is critical to University Libraries publishing that we enable creative and diverse publishing outputs and therefore support the publication of scholarly journals, digital exhibits, research data, open educational resources, and more. We are available for consultation when you are planning your project and are interested to learn more about your work.

Researcher Visibility

We also offer support in creating and maintaining your researcher profiles, amplification of your scholarly presence, and understanding persistent identifiers. Texas State University offers an institutional ORCID membership to every community member, which can greatly help you navigate the research landscape and maintain access to your scholarly work.

Understanding This Chapter

There are seven different sections in this chapter that aim to cover many parts of the publishing lifecycle. These chapters focus on Copyright and Licensing as you begin the publishing process. This is followed by Publishing Opportunities, which highlights ways in which you can distribute your work and increase your research impact. And, translating your research into content that can be shared as Open Educational Resources.

Please move through this chapter linearly or as you feel the need, and don’t forget to bookmark pages as you go!
