TXST TRIO Programs

History of TRIO

TRIO programs are federally funded programs designed to motivate and support students of disadvantaged backgrounds work towards and obtain a college degree. Services provided to students include but are not limited to: academic tutoring, personal counseling, mentoring, and financial guidance. The TRIO Programs, are products of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 and the Higher Education Act of 1965. Since TRIO’s establishment funding has surpassed 1 billion dollars in annual funding, serving over 62,000 students in Texas and over 900,000 students nationally.

Student Support Services (SSS)

SSS aims to encourage and assist traditionally underrepresented students in the completion of a post-secondary education.

Services:

• Textbook and Calculator Loans
• Access to in-office Computer Lab
• Peer Mentoring and a Personal Success Coach
• Skill-building Workshops, Seminars, and Career Trips
• STEM Undergraduate Research Opportunities

• President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Higher Education Act of 1965 at Texas State University.

TRIO Programs Serving College Students

McNair Scholars

The goal of the McNair Scholars program is to increase graduate by involving undergraduate students in research and other scholarly activities. McNair participants are either low-income first-generation college students or members of a group that is traditionally underrepresented in graduate education and have demonstrated strong academic potential.

Veterans Upward Bound (VUB)

Through comprehensive programming and continuous evaluation, VUB strives to promote academic success, retention, and graduation among participants, and contribute to their overall well-being and success beyond the classroom.
