1. Review the following case studies regarding nurse liability associated with inappropriate delegation:

Reflect on these two scenarios independently or with peers. Consider what errors in delegation you believed occurred and the repercussions of these actions for the nurse involved.

2. The RN is delegating tasks to the LPN and AP on a medical-surgical unit.

Place an “X” in the appropriate column where an error in delegation occurred.

Directs the AP to assess the pain level of a post-op Day 3 hip replacement patient and report back the finding.
Directs the LPN to give 1 mg IV push morphine to the 2-hour post-op of a total left knee replacement patient and ensure documentation.
Assumes the AP will report back any abnormal blood pressures. The AP is assigned to collect blood pressures on all the clients on the unit by 0800.
Directs a new AP to ambulate a post-op Day 2 shoulder replacement client who needs the assistance of one person and an adaptive walker. The AP voices concerns about never having used an adaptive walker before. The RN directs the AP to get another AP to help.
